What it is
NRF: Retail's Big Show is the flagship event of the National Retail Federation and the first big date on the retail calendar every January. It fills the Javits Center in New York with more than 41,000 retail professionals from over 100 countries and more than 1,000 technology and service providers.
The 2027 program runs over three days with 175+ sessions. Recurring themes are AI and emerging technology, retail media, supply chain and reverse logistics, and how to move faster without hurting the customer experience. Around the main days there are themed programs such as Commerce Media Saturday, Supply Chain Sunday and AI Monday, plus store tours and guided expo tours.
Why it matters for smaller online stores
- It is the best single place to see where retail technology is heading for the year, from AI shopping assistants to checkout and payments.
- The expo floor, including the Startup Hub and the Innovators Showcase, lets you compare tools side by side instead of sitting through separate sales demos.
- Big retailers share what worked for them. Many of those ideas (personalization, retail media, faster fulfilment) can be scaled down for a smaller store.
Who should go
- Owners and managers of growing online stores who are choosing new technology for the coming year
- Ecommerce and marketing leads who want a view of retail media and AI in one trip
- Brands selling through both their own store and physical retail
How to get the most out of it
- Pick three problems you want to solve before you go, for example checkout drop off or product discovery, and plan your expo route around them.
- Book meetings with vendors in advance. The floor is very large and walk ups are hard on the busiest days.
- Sessions are plentiful, so prioritize case studies with numbers over general trend talks.
