Google AI Overviews Explained: What They Mean for Your Online Store

5 min read  ·  September 22, 2026

Google AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries that now appear above traditional search results for most informational queries, answering the searcher directly instead of just linking to a page. For online stores, that means fewer clicks reach your site even when you still rank, unless your content and product data are built to be quoted.

AI Overviews now touch most searches, and clicks are dropping

Google expanded AI Overviews broadly through 2025 and 2026, and they now appear on a large share of everyday queries, not just complex research questions. For a store that depends on organic search for cheap, steady traffic, this changes what ranking well actually earns you.

People click far less often once an AI summary appears. The Pew Research Center tracked 68,000 real Google searches and found users clicked through to a website only 8% of the time when an AI summary was present, compared with 15% when it was absent. Only 1% of those AI summaries led to a click on one of the cited sources.

Even the top-ranking page is losing most of its clicks. Ahrefs analyzed 300,000 keywords using Google Search Console data and found that by December 2025, an AI Overview cut the click-through rate of the #1 organic result by 58%, up sharply from a 34.5% drop measured just eight months earlier.

Zero-click search is now the default outcome, not the exception. Similarweb clickstream data showed the share of Google searches ending without any click rising from 56% in May 2024 to 69% a year later, and later industry trackers put the figure higher still into 2026.

Why some pages still get quoted and clicked

AI Overviews are built from a small number of sources the system judges as the clearest, most specific answer to the question asked. A page that buries the answer under a long introduction, or discusses a topic in general terms without a concrete number, fact or step, is harder to lift out and quote. A page that answers the question in one direct sentence, backs it with a named source, and organizes the rest as clearly labeled facts is far more likely to be the one AI Overviews shows and links back to.

How to write for both people and AI Overviews

1

Answer the exact question in your first sentence. Whatever a page targets, whether that is a product spec, a shipping policy or a how-to, state the direct answer before any context or story. Systems that generate AI Overviews favor a sentence that stands alone.

2

Structure facts so they can be lifted out cleanly. Use short paragraphs, one idea per heading, and simple lists for steps or comparisons. Avoid burying a specific number or policy inside a long paragraph of marketing language.

3

Back claims with structured data and named sources. Add Product, FAQ and Article schema so a machine reader can confirm what your page is about, and cite real sources for any statistic. Both signal that a page is safe to summarize and safe to cite.

AI Overviews did not kill search traffic, they changed what earns it. A vague answer that ranks well but says nothing specific gets summarized and skipped. A direct, well-sourced answer to a real question still gets picked, and often still gets the click too.

Key takeaways

Google AI Overviews now appear on a large share of everyday searches and answer the question directly, which is reducing clicks even for pages that still rank well.

Pew Research found people click through only 8% of the time when an AI summary appears, versus 15% without one, and just 1% of AI summaries lead to a click on a cited source.

Ahrefs found AI Overviews cut the top-ranking page’s click-through rate by 58% as of December 2025, up from 34.5% eight months earlier.

Pages built to answer one question directly, in plain, structured language backed by a named source, are the ones AI systems tend to quote and link back to.

FAQ

Does losing clicks to AI Overviews mean SEO no longer matters?
No, it means the target moved. Ranking still matters because AI Overviews mostly draw from top-ranking pages, but the content itself now needs to answer questions directly enough to be quoted, not just to rank.
Can a small store realistically get quoted in an AI Overview?
Yes. AI Overviews favor the clearest, most specific answer to a question, not necessarily the biggest brand. A focused page that states a real fact or policy in one direct sentence often outperforms a longer page from a larger competitor.
Should we stop investing in content because of the click drop?
No. Even with lower click-through rates, organic search still sends real, low-cost buyers, and being the source an AI Overview cites also builds visibility and trust that other channels do not.
