Poundland's rescue deal collapses as insolvency risk grows
Gordon Brothers, which owns Poundland, rejected a solvent takeover from Martin Property Group that would have kept the chain trading and repaid its £30 million shareholder loan over time. It reportedly believes that loan is more likely repaid in full if Poundland is broken up instead. Three directors overseeing the sale are said ready to resign, with Sky News reporting they saw "attempts" to steer Poundland toward insolvency. The chain employs about 12,000 people across 600 stores.
For your store:If a discount chain near you is this fragile, don't assume low prices alone keep shoppers loyal. Service and trust matter too.
Target overhauls its $3 billion Threshold home brand
Target reworked Threshold, its largest home goods private label and worth almost $3 billion a year, adding more than 800 new items with better quality, refreshed bedding and barware, and more elevated finishes. Stores now group complementary pieces together instead of by category, and some prices fell too, including a $20 cut on certain comforters. It's part of a $1 billion, multiyear turnaround under CEO Michael Fiddelke. Analyst Corey Tarlowe said investors may be "underappreciating the magnitude" of the change.
For your store:Grouping complementary products together, not just by category, is a simple merchandising trick any online store can copy too.
Amazon Business adds AI tools to show procurement's real value
At its Reshape event in Nashville, Amazon Business expanded its Business Assistant AI tool to handle order tracking, approvals, payment allocation and spending analysis automatically. It also launched Value Intelligence, a reporting tool that benchmarks a buyer's savings, efficiency and compliance against other organizations' data. VP Shelley Salomon said the goal is to move procurement teams from asking what something cost to showing "what value is procurement creating."
For your store:If you buy supplies through Amazon Business, check the new reporting tools before your next budget review. They're built to prove value.
WHSmith is rolling out x-hoppers, a Wildix platform pairing wireless staff headsets with alerts and QR-code customer requests, to more than 300 UK stores after a pilot at its Manchester Piccadilly store. That pilot sent over 43,000 notifications to staff and logged nearly 1,000 QR assistance requests, with sales up as much as 22% in some categories. The system is already live at the Heathrow Terminal 5 flagship, with 32 priority stores rolling out next.
For your store:Faster staff response to customer requests, even via a simple QR code, can measurably lift sales in physical retail.
British shop prices rose 2.1% year over year in October, the British Retail Consortium said, up from 1.4% in September and the highest in two years. Non-food inflation jumped to 1.7% from 0.8%, with furniture, flooring and DIY hit hardest, while ambient food inflation rose to 3.2%. BRC chief Helen Dickinson said "the dam is starting to break" on costs retailers have absorbed, urging the government to cancel a planned 3.5% rates rise before the Budget.
For your store:If your costs are climbing too, price rises are becoming more acceptable to shoppers right now. Don't be the last retailer to adjust.
PayPal's Q3 net income fell 14% to $1.07 billion even as total payments volume grew 6%, with its core checkout business growing just 1-2% for four straight quarters. Venmo offset that: its debit card's monthly active accounts rose 55% to 6.7 million, including 1.6 million first-time users. PayPal has cut about 2,000 jobs this year while adding AI automation. CEO Enrique Lores called it "a multi-year transformation" with "much more work to do."
For your store:If you accept PayPal at checkout, note Venmo's growth. Younger shoppers increasingly expect it as a payment option too.
UK parcel satisfaction falls for the first time in three years
Overall satisfaction with UK parcel firms dropped to 75% from a stable 78%, Ofcom's fourth annual survey found, ranging from 64% to 84% by company. Amazon and FedEx topped the table again. Yodel and Evri ranked last for a fourth straight year, with Evri scoring just 26% satisfaction and 42% dissatisfaction. Ofcom policy director Fergal Farragher said firms "need to put customers first and improve performance, or we will consider further measures."

The USDA proposed requiring all states to issue SNAP EBT cards with chip and tap-to-pay technology, and requiring retailers to accept them, to cut skimming fraud that plain magnetic-stripe cards allow. Nearly a dozen states already use chip cards, with about six more converting. States would get two years to comply if the rule is finalized, and comments are due December 22. The National Grocers Association backs the move, citing fraud drops where chip cards are already used.
For your store:Grocery and convenience retailers taking SNAP should budget now for new point-of-sale hardware ahead of a likely two-year deadline.
THG Fulfil extends its deal with The Range and wilko's owner
THG Fulfil signed a multi-year extension with CDS Superstores, which owns The Range, wilko and Homebase, to keep handling fulfilment and courier management as the retailer invests in Google Cloud AI search and a Mirakl-powered online marketplace. About 95% of units already move through automated processes, including Geekplus robots. THG's Tom Killeen called fulfilment "the centre of customer excellence and brand reputation."
For your store:As marketplaces and automation reshape fulfilment, make sure your own 3PL can scale with your growth, not just your current volume.
