Meta blocks ads that link to TikTok across seven countries

Meta started blocking ads tied to ByteDance, TikTok's former controlling owner, in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. The restriction also hits other advertisers whose campaigns link to TikTok or other ByteDance apps. Meta spokesperson Chris Sgro said the company doesn't "have to run ads from a competitor" trying to pull users away. TikTok stayed publicly silent. The move follows Meta pressing TikTok to match child-safety steps from its $18 billion US settlement.

For your store: If you run paid social, check any campaign that links to TikTok or a ByteDance property in these seven markets before it gets rejected.

Shopify starts sharing markdown prices with AI shopping agents

Shopify now passes a product's compare-at (strikethrough) price to AI shopping agents through Shopify Catalog, so agents can tell when an item is discounted. Before this, agents reading Catalog only saw the current selling price. Merchants get a toggle in the Compare-at section of the Shopify Catalog mapping page in admin, and separate controls can still block individual AI agents from reading a product's data at all.

For your store: Double-check your compare-at fields are accurate now that AI agents may quote your markdowns to shoppers who never saw your store.

Ocean freight rates ease 2%, but still far above summer lows

Drewry's World Container Index fell 2% to $4,351 per 40-foot container last week, as Transpacific and Asia-Europe rates cooled during China's Golden Week lull. Shanghai to Los Angeles dropped 3% to $7,624, and Shanghai to Rotterdam fell 2% to $3,337. Rates are still roughly 30% above July's low point heading into peak holiday shipping season, with carriers planning further increases later in October.

For your store: If you still need to import holiday stock, book now. Carriers plan to raise rates again in the second half of October.

McDonald's faces an antitrust suit over AI-powered pricing pressure on franchisees

Consumers filed a proposed federal class action accusing McDonald's of pressuring franchisees to adopt its AI-powered algorithmic pricing, which they say blocks owners from competing freely and pushes prices up. The suit claims McDonald's uses the technology "to nickel-and-dime consumers down to the last French fry." McDonald's disputes this, saying franchisees set their own prices. The case joins a wave of suits testing whether shared pricing software crosses into illegal coordination.

For your store: If you use pricing software shared across multiple sellers, make sure it reflects only your own costs and demand, not rivals' prices.

ShipStation lets Walmart Marketplace sellers tap Walmart's own shipping rates

ShipStation launched Ship with Walmart, letting Walmart Marketplace sellers buy shipping labels at Walmart-negotiated rates, get up to $100 of order protection, and manage Walmart orders alongside Amazon, TikTok Shop, Shopify and eBay orders in one dashboard. Sellers can keep their existing carrier accounts alongside it. It currently covers US domestic shipments only. Walmart's marketplace has been growing roughly 20% a year, with three times as many sellers as a year earlier.

For your store: If you sell on Walmart Marketplace, compare its negotiated rates against your current carrier before your next shipment goes out.
